More gripping and full-blooded stories from Larkhall women's prison, with this tape comprising episodes 5-7 of ITV's brilliant drama. Two of the main storylines traced in these episodes are the aftermath of one prisoner's suicide, with all the evidence pointing to the involvement of the manipulative and corrupt office Jim Fenner, and the growing relationship between charismatic murderess Nikki Wade and wing governor Helen Stuart. Fenner (Jack Ellis) is one of the most memorable TV villains in years, and Ellis evidently enjoys playing the part--you'll be booing every time he walks on screen. Mandana Jones (Nikki) and Simone Lahbib (Helen) are even better as the will-they-won't-they couple, perplexed and wary about an attraction for each other that is as intense as it is surprising (especially for the hitherto heterosexual Helen). The other regulars are all here too, including the dangerous Shell Dockley (Debra Stephenson), her edgy sidekick Denny (Alicia Eyo) and the authoritarian but comical officer the inmates nickname Bodybag (cleverly played by Helen Fraser). Blackmail, bribery and betrayal, family secrets and illicit love--Bad Girls loves to pile on the sensational stories, and does so here with gusto and panache. --Andy Medhurst
